globalisation

Right at this very moment, i'm sitting cross-legged on my bed, munching cookies while trying to complete this assignment. hmmmm.. this is exactly what globalisation is.

anyway, back to topic.
so after reading the song, i've come to realize taht while globalisation has its benefits, it does affect us and the natural environment in one way or another. Globalisation may connect people, it may improve a country's economy, it may even provide people with more employment opportunities. But, we are sooo preoccupied with life that we have overlooked the fact that because of globalisation, the wonderful works of Mother Nature are being destroyed. We are so caught up in our own little worlds with our newest gadgets and technology. Not once have we stopped to think about the changes taking place around us.

Well, all over the world, forests, plantations, tree and swamps and being destroyed to may way for new buildings, new housing estates, industries and various factories. I feel that while globablisation is important, we ought not to use it to this extent. Yes, it may have developed countries, it may have progressed the world but, the real question is, what has it not done.

TERRORISM

Terrorism comes is many forms. Over the past few years, terrorists come up with all sorts of plans, have gone out of their way just to prove their point. The Bali bombings, September 11, 2001 attacks and rebellions are just a couple of examples.

I never really cared much about terrorism. Of course, I heard about it, read about it all the time, was taught in school and knew of the extreme precautions being taken. But I had always been ignorant. I’d always thought that the initial ‘hoo-ha’ on terrorists would die down after a while. I vividly recall going to America around two years ago. All I did was whine, groan and grumble at the airport. No, not because the queues were long but because we had to go past millions of checks. The security there is extremely tight naturally, being a popular terrorist target. But I found the various scans, the confiscation of food utterly ridiculous. The men parading around the airport in blue were mercilessly made fun of at by my sister and I.

Now, I have realized that Singapore was one inch away from being attacked. Our cosy and calm lifestyle was almost destroyed by one man’s plans to crash a plane into our renown airport. One can only imagine what would have happened if Mas Selamat bin Kastari had not been caught before he carried his plan out.

One cannot really say where he is or what he is doing at this very moment. Reports have been given of him being seen in the wilderness near Bukit Timah. Who knows what he’s doing or what other plot he is hatching now. We can only hope and pray that he is caught as soon as possible. But, my heart goes out to his family, his wife and 5 children. All this must be affecting them ten times as much as what it is doing to us.

reflections on Mr Gabriel.

hello all. ss stuff. here goes.

Our deep and lazy thoughts about nothing in particular were jolted from their midst when Mr. Gabriel began his talk. Different from other assembly talks where everyone is dozing off, for this one, from the gallery, many heads could been seen, perked up and paying utmost attention. What made his talk different form others was that anyone could see form the way he spoke, he felt strongly about the topic. His emotions and opinions were relayed in the most amazing way and he succeeded in grasping our attention.

Well, out of the many things learnt. One prominent topic in Mr. Gabriel’s talk was on racism. People nowadays have stereotypical behaviour. They discriminate people because of their skin colour and simply because of their different appearance. As he mentioned, this is completely ridiculous as we cannot ridicule and discriminate others who live the same way as we do, go to the same school, eat the same things and even go to same places. Mr. Gabriel said that we are all brothers and sisters. We ought not to be doing such things.

Because of the increased racism around us, there is another major problem, terrorism. The twin tower attack, rebellion and outcries in many, many countries are also due to terrorism.
